Meaning and history
Leofwine is an Old English masculine name combining lēof, “dear” or “beloved,” with wine, “friend,” giving the meaning “dear friend.” It was common in Anglo-Saxon England and was borne by nobles and churchmen. Leofwine Godwinson, a younger brother of King Harold II, died at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Norman Conquest contributed to the name’s decline. Modern bearers are rare, and its significance is chiefly Anglo-Saxon historical and linguistic.
