Meaning and history
Derived from the Greek λέων, meaning "lion," Léon merged during the Christian era with its Latin cognate Leo, and the two forms became partly interchangeable across European languages. It was common among Jews in medieval England, and a famous bearer was communist revolutionary Leon Trotsky (1879–1940), whose Russian name was Лев.
