This name comes from Greek λέων (leon), meaning “lion,” combined with the patronymic suffix ἴδης (ides). It was borne by Leonidas, the 5th-century BC Spartan king who died with his army defending Thermopylae against the Persians, and also by a 3rd-century saint and martyr from Alexandria, the father of Origen.
