Meaning and history
Leonore is a German and Scandinavian form of Eleanor. Eleanor entered Europe through medieval French and royal usage, but its deeper origin and meaning remain uncertain; attempts to derive it directly from Greek “light” or Arabic roots are not established. Beethoven used Leonore for the heroine of his opera Fidelio and titled several overtures after her. Notable bearers include American diplomat and philanthropist Leonore Annenberg and German-Swedish royal Princess Leonore, Duchess of Gotland.
