Lettie is an English feminine diminutive used for Letitia, Violet, Colette, and other names containing a similar sound. When derived from Letitia, it ultimately comes from Latin laetitia, meaning “joy” or “gladness”; other source names have unrelated origins. It became familiar as an independent nickname in the nineteenth century. Notable bearers include American educator and activist Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans and American blues singer Lettie Beckon Alston.
