Meaning and history
Lian has several unrelated origins. In Chinese it may represent characters such as 莲, “lotus,” 廉, “honest,” or 连, “to connect,” among many others, so meaning depends on the character and tone. In Dutch it can be a short form of names such as Juliana, while in Hebrew it may be a modern compound or transliteration. The spelling therefore has no single meaning. Chinese rower Lian Junjie is a notable bearer, though Chinese name order and the written character remain important.
Lian rose from #515 to #428 for boys between 2024 and 2025. That year also produced its highest recorded birth count, at 752.
