Meaning and history
Lilith is a name derived from Akkadian lilitu, meaning “of the night,” and in ancient Assyrian myth it referred to a kind of demon. In Jewish tradition, Lilith was Adam’s first wife, driven from Eden and replaced by Eve because she would not submit to him, and the offspring of Adam or Samael and Lilith were said to be the evil spirits of the world. She does not appear in the Bible but is mentioned in later Jewish texts such as the Alphabet of Sirach.
