Logan comes from a Scottish surname based on a place in Ayrshire meaning “little hollow,” from Gaelic lag meaning “hollow” or “pit” plus a diminutive suffix. The name began rising in popularity in the United States in the mid-1970s, possibly influenced by Logan’s Run (1976), and was further associated with the comic book character Wolverine, whose alias is Logan. It became very common across the English-speaking world by the late 20th century and peaked in the United States in 2017, when it ranked fifth among boys’ names.
