Loïc is a Breton and French masculine form of Louis. Louis descends from the Germanic name Chlodowig, composed of elements meaning “fame” and “battle,” and is conventionally interpreted as “famous in battle.” Numerous French kings named Louis gave the name major royal and historical significance. The diaeresis in Loïc shows that the vowels are pronounced separately. Notable bearers include French sociologist Loïc Wacquant and French footballer Loïc Rémy.
