Meaning and history
Created by R. D. Blackmore for the title character of his 1869 novel Lorna Doone, set in southern England and centered on the perilous romance between John Ridd and Lorna Doone, the name may have been inspired by the Scottish place name Lorne or by the title Marquis of Lorne.
