Meaning and history
Ludvig is a Scandinavian and Slovene form of Ludwig, from Germanic elements meaning “famous” and “battle.” It is consequently interpreted as “famous warrior” or “famous in battle.” The name belongs to the same historical family as Louis and Lewis. Scandinavian royal and noble use helped preserve the spelling. Notable bearers include Danish composer Ludvig Holberg, a major playwright and historian of the Enlightenment, and Swedish footballer Ludvig Augustinsson.
