Luther

From a German surname derived from the Old German given name Leuthar, Luther was borne by Martin Luther (1483–1546), the monk and theologian who began the Protestant Reformation by nailing his famous 95 theses to a church door. The surname later came into use as a given name in his honor, especially among Protestants, and a notable modern bearer was the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968).
