Meaning and history

Macsen is the Welsh form of Maximus, a Latin name meaning “greatest.” In the medieval Welsh tale The Dream of Macsen Wledig, Macsen is a Roman emperor identified with Magnus Maximus who travels to Britain after dreaming of a beautiful woman. The historical Magnus Maximus was a fourth-century Roman usurper who became important in later Welsh dynastic legend. Macsen remains a distinctly Welsh form with strong Roman-British literary and historical associations.
