Madailéin is an Irish form of Madeleine or Magdalene. The name ultimately refers to Mary Magdalene in the New Testament and means “woman from Magdala,” a town on the Sea of Galilee whose name is linked with a Semitic word for “tower.” Mary Magdalene’s role as a follower of Jesus gave the name lasting Christian importance. The acute accents mark Irish vowel length and should be preserved. Prominent exact-spelling modern bearers are uncommon.
