Meaning and history
Manasseh comes from the Hebrew name מְנַשֶּׁה (Menashshe), meaning “causing to forget,” derived from נָשָׁה (nasha), “to forget.” In the Old Testament, it is the name of Joseph and Asenath’s eldest son and the ancestor of one of the twelve tribes of Israel, and it was also borne by a 7th-century BC king of Judah who was condemned in the Bible for permitting the worship of other gods.
