Marcell is a Hungarian, German, and English form of Marcellus or Marcel. Marcellus was a Roman family name, a diminutive of Marcus. Marcus is traditionally associated with Mars, the Roman god of war, although its precise etymology is uncertain. Saints named Marcellus helped preserve the family in Christian Europe. Notable bearers include German footballer Marcell Jansen and Hungarian film director Marcell Jankovics. Marcel is the standard French form.
