Marcus is a Roman praenomen, or given name, probably derived from the name of the Roman god Mars, and it was one of the most popular Roman praenomina. Notable bearers include Marcus Tullius Cicero, a 1st-century BC statesman and orator; Marcus Antonius, a 1st-century BC politician known as Mark Antony; and Marcus Aurelius, a prominent 2nd-century emperor. It was also the name of a 4th-century pope, and while this spelling has sometimes been used in the English-speaking world, the traditional English form Mark has been more common.
