Meaning and history
Mário is the Italian and Spanish form of Marius. Notable bearers include American racecar driver Mario Andretti (1940-) and Canadian hockey player Mario Lemieux (1965-), and the name is also associated with Nintendo’s moustached Italian plumber character, who first appeared as the playable hero of Donkey Kong in 1981. In Japanese Katakana, his name is written マリオ (Mario), and he was reportedly named after Mario Segale (1934-2018), an American businessman who rented a warehouse to Nintendo.
Mario moved from #398 to #438 for boys between 2024 and 2025. Its highest annual birth count came in 1980, with 2,936 births.
