Marius is a Roman family name derived either from Mars, the Roman god of war, or from the Latin root mas, maris meaning “male.” It was borne by Gaius Marius, the famous Roman consul of the 2nd century BC, and since the beginning of the Christian era it has occasionally been used as a masculine form of Maria.
