South Slavic (Croatian, Serbian, and Slovenian) form of Matthias, ultimately from the Hebrew Mattityahu, meaning "gift of Yahweh." Matija Gubec (c. 1548-1573) led the Croatian-Slovenian peasant revolt of 1573 and remains a national symbol of resistance in Croatia.
