From Greek Ματθίας (Matthias), a variant of Ματθαῖος, this name appears in the New Testament as that of the apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot. It was also borne by kings of Hungary, spelled Mátyás in Hungarian, including Matthias I, who introduced important reforms to the kingdom in the 15th century.
