Meaning and history
Maura is an Irish form of Máire, the Irish form of Mary, and also the feminine form of the Latin name Maurus, meaning "Moorish" or "dark-skinned." These separate traditions give the name more than one origin. Notable bearers include American actress Maura Tierney and journalist Maura Kelly.
Maura moved from #816 to #917 for girls between 2005 and 2006. Its highest annual birth count came in 1964, with 430 births.
