Maurus

Maurus is a Late Latin masculine name meaning “Moor” or “person from Mauretania,” the ancient North African region. It is the source of forms such as Mauro and Maurice, although their later use no longer necessarily indicates ancestry. Saint Maurus, traditionally a sixth-century disciple of Benedict of Nursia, gave the name monastic and Christian significance. A notable modern bearer is Swiss historian Maurus Reinkowski. The related feminine Latin form is Maura.
