Maxentius derives from the Roman name family based on maximus, meaning “greatest.” The emperor Maxentius ruled part of the Roman Empire before his defeat by Constantine at the Milvian Bridge in 312, while saints later preserved the form in Christian use. Notable bearers include French footballer Maxence Lacroix and French writer Maxence Fermine. Maxence is used primarily for men in France.
