Meaning and history
Maya has several established origins. In Sanskrit it means illusion or magic and is associated with both Buddhist and Hindu tradition, while in modern English it is also used as a variant of Maia and sometimes in reference to the Maya civilization. Notable bearers include poet and author Maya Angelou and actress Maya Rudolph.
Maya has risen sharply in the modern US rankings, moving from #113 in 2000 to #62 in 2025. It now stands at #62 for girls. Its highest annual birth count came in 2006, with 5,047 births.
