Meaning and history
Mehetabel is a biblical Hebrew feminine name meaning “God makes happy” or “God benefits.” In Genesis, Mehetabel is named as the wife of Hadad, an early king of Edom. The name also appears in later Jewish and English Puritan naming traditions, where biblical names were often revived directly from scripture. The spelling Mehitabel is a common variant. American poet Mehetabel Wesley Wright, sister of John and Charles Wesley, is a notable historical bearer.
