Mehmet is the Turkish form of Muhammad, adapted through Ottoman Turkish pronunciation. Muhammad is an Arabic name meaning “praised” or “praiseworthy.” Its central Islamic significance comes from the Prophet Muhammad, founder of Islam. Mehmet was borne by several Ottoman sultans, including Mehmet II, known as the Conqueror after capturing Constantinople in 1453. Notable modern bearers include Turkish footballer Mehmet Topal and Nobel Prize-winning scientist Mehmet Öz.
