Meaning and history
Melita is the Latinized form of Greek Melite, derived from meli, meaning “honey.” Several nymphs in Greek mythology bear the name. Separately, Melita was the Latin name of Malta and was used for Princess Victoria Melita because she was born there. The name therefore has both mythological and geographical associations. Notable bearers include Croatian gymnast Melita Ruhn and British civil servant Melita Norwood. The intended association can depend on family tradition.
