Meaning and history
Mercury comes from the Latin Mercurius, probably from mercor, meaning “to trade,” or merces, meaning “wages.” It was the name of the Roman god of trade, merchants, and travellers, later identified with the Greek god Hermes, and it was also given to the first planet in the solar system and to a metallic chemical element named after the god.
