Meaning and history
Meredith comes from the Welsh name Maredudd or Meredydd, ultimately from Old Welsh forms such as Margetud, possibly combining mawredd meaning “greatness” or “magnificence” with iudd meaning “lord.” The Welsh forms were widely used throughout the Middle Ages. In English-speaking countries, the name has been used more often for girls than boys since the mid-1920s, though it remains masculine in Wales. A notable bearer of the surname was the English novelist and poet George Meredith (1828–1909).
