Midas is an ancient Anatolian and Greek-recorded royal name of uncertain linguistic origin. Several kings of Phrygia bore it, but the legendary King Midas became famous for receiving the power to turn everything he touched into gold, only to discover it was a curse. Another myth gives him donkey’s ears after he judges a musical contest. The name therefore symbolizes dangerous greed or misjudged wishes, although those are literary associations rather than its unknown literal meaning.
