Meaning and history
Miia is a Finnish and Estonian form of Mia. Mia developed as a short form of Maria, from Hebrew Miryam, whose original meaning remains uncertain; proposals such as “beloved,” “rebellious,” and “sea of bitterness” are disputed. The doubled vowel reflects Finnish and Estonian spelling and pronunciation. Notable bearers include Finnish actor Miia Nuutila and Finnish ice hockey player Miia Niemi. Mia is the more widespread international form.
In 2025, 8 babies were recorded with the name Miia, ranking #10,917 among girls.
