Milán comes from the Slavic element milŭ, meaning “gracious” or “dear,” and began as a short form of names using that element. It was originally used in Czech, Slovak, and South Slavic languages, but has recently become popular elsewhere in Europe. The name is also borne by a city in Italy, whose name comes from Latin Mediolanum and may ultimately be of Celtic origin meaning “middle of the plain”; in some cases, this city name may have influenced use of the given name.
