Meaning and history
Mildred comes from Old English Mildþryð, meaning "gentle strength" from milde, "gentle," and þryþ, "strength." It was borne by 7th-century abbess Saint Mildred, daughter of the Kentish princess Saint Ermenburga; rare after the Norman Conquest, the name was revived in the 19th century.
