Meaning and history
Miles is an English name derived from the Germanic name Milo, which the Normans introduced to England in the form Miles. Its meaning is uncertain, though it may be related to the Slavic element milŭ, meaning “gracious” or “dear,” and it was associated at an early date with the Latin miles, meaning “soldier.” Notable bearers include the American musician Miles Davis (1926–1991), and in Scotland the name was historically used as an Anglicized form of Maoilios.
