Meaning and history

This name comes from the Gothic name *Amalaswinþa, formed from amals meaning “unceasing, vigorous, brave” and swinþs meaning “strong.” Amalaswintha was a 6th-century queen of the Ostrogoths. The Normans brought the name to England as Melisent or Melisende, and Melisende was also the name of a 12th-century queen of Jerusalem and daughter of Baldwin II.
