Meaning and history
Mircea is a Romanian masculine name derived from the Slavic element mir, meaning “peace” or “world,” with a Romanian name-forming suffix. Mircea the Elder, a fourteenth- and fifteenth-century prince of Wallachia, gave the name major Romanian historical significance through his resistance to Ottoman expansion. Notable modern bearers include Romanian historian of religion and novelist Mircea Eliade and Romanian filmmaker Mircea Daneliuc. The name should retain Romanian pronunciation.
