Mireille comes from the Occitan name Mirèio, first used by the poet Frédéric Mistral for the heroine of his poem Mirèio (1859), and is probably derived from the Occitan word mirar, meaning “to admire.” In classical Occitan orthography, the name is spelled Mirèlha. A notable bearer is the French singer Mireille Mathieu (1946–).
