Mirko is a South Slavic, Italian, and German masculine name, commonly used as a short form of Slavic names containing mir, an element meaning “peace” or “world,” such as Miroslav. In South Slavic history it was borne by Prince Mirko Petrović-Njegoš of Montenegro, a nineteenth-century soldier and poet. Modern bearers include Croatian mixed martial artist Mirko Filipović, widely known as Cro Cop, and Italian footballer Mirko Vučinić. Its similarity to unrelated names in other languages does not change its established Slavic derivation.
