Meaning and history
Montserrat is named after a mountain near Barcelona, from Latin mons serratus, meaning “jagged mountain.” The mountain is home to a medieval monastery that contains the famous statue of the Virgin Mary known in Catalan as Mare de Déu de Montserrat, or “Mother of God of Montserrat,” who is a patron saint of Catalonia.
