Morgan is an old Welsh name derived from Morcant or Morgant, possibly combining elements meaning "sea" and "circle." It was traditionally masculine, but became widely used for girls in the United States during the late twentieth century, helped by the Arthurian figure Morgan le Fay and actress Morgan Fairchild. Other notable bearers include actor Morgan Freeman and financier J. P. Morgan, whose surname shares the same Welsh origin.
