From Hebrew מֹרִיָה (Moriya), possibly meaning “seen by Yahweh,” Moriah is an Old Testament place name referring to the land where Abraham is to sacrifice Isaac and to the mountain on which Solomon builds the temple, which may be the same location. Since the 1980s, it has occasionally been used as a feminine given name in America.
