It derives from Old English elements generally interpreted as mōr, “moor” or “marshy upland,” and lēah, “woodland clearing,” giving the sense “clearing by the moor.” Several English places called Morley supplied the surname independently. As a given name it is uncommon. Notable bearers include Canadian writer Morley Callaghan and Canadian-American journalist Morley Safer, the longtime correspondent for the television news program 60 Minutes.
