Morticia is a literary name created by American cartoonist Charles Addams for Morticia Addams, matriarch of the macabre Addams Family. It was probably formed from Latin mors or mortis, meaning “death,” with a feminine name ending. The character first appeared unnamed in New Yorker cartoons and received the name for the 1960s television adaptation. Because the name was created for this fictional figure and remains primarily associated with her, reliable real-life bearers are rare.
