Mūstafa means “chosen” in Arabic and comes from اصطفا (iṣṭafā), meaning “to choose”; it is an epithet of the Prophet Muhammad. The name was borne by four Ottoman sultans, and another well-known bearer was Mustafa Kemal (1881–1938), also called Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey.
