Meaning unknown, but presumably of Irish origin. In Irish legend, Naoise was the young man who fled to Scotland with Deirdre, who had been promised to Conchobar, king of Ulster; Conchobar later captured Deirdre and killed Naoise, and Deirdre died of grief.
