Meaning and history
Napoléon comes from the old Italian name Napoleone, best known from the French emperor Napoléon Bonaparte (1769–1821), who was born in Corsica. Its etymology is uncertain: it may derive from Old German Nibelungen, meaning “sons of mist,” a name from Germanic legend for the keepers of a treasure hoard often identified with the Burgundians, or it may be related to the Italian city of Napoli (Naples).
