Meaning and history
Nathaniel is a variant of Nathanael and has been in regular use in the English-speaking world since the Protestant Reformation. Although Nathanael appears in most New Testament versions, Nathaniel has been the more common spelling. A notable bearer was the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864), author of The Scarlet Letter.
