Neo has independent roots in different cultures. It is associated with the Greek prefix neo-, meaning “new,” and is also a Southern African name, especially in Setswana and Sesotho, meaning “gift.” South African musician Neo Muyanga and the fictional protagonist Neo from The Matrix helped make the name internationally familiar.
