Meaning and history
Nerea is a Spanish and Basque feminine name derived from Greek Nereus, the name of an ancient sea god and father of the Nereids. It is consequently associated with the sea. In Basque, nerea also means “mine,” but this is an independent lexical coincidence that may reinforce the name locally. Notable bearers include Spanish footballer Nerea Eizagirre and Spanish actor Nerea Barros. The name has both classical and modern Iberian associations.
In 2025, 11 babies were recorded with the name Nerea, ranking #8,860 among girls.
